Loving Your Multicultural Identity

 Living Large outside Ethnic Boxes

Kenny Sok was tired of never being an insider.

He clearly stood out as the only Asian kid in a class of 130 in Rockland, Maine.

But even among the sea of Asian Americans at Berkeley, he found few who valued his Cambodian American heritage. It felt like much of his story didn’t matter to anyone.

Was Kenny destined to be a perpetual outsider?

 Living Large outside Ethnic Boxes

Kenny Sok was tired of never being an insider.

He clearly stood out as the only Asian kid in a class of 130 in Rockland, Maine.

But even among the sea of Asian Americans at Berkeley, he found few who valued his Cambodian American heritage. It felt like much of his story didn’t matter to anyone.

Was Kenny destined to be a perpetual outsider?

Kenny was delighted to discover Michelle Lee-Barnewall’s book A Longing to Belong. He saw much of his story reflected in hers.

Filled with curiosity, Kenny asked the author for a Zoom conversation. When she agreed, Kenny peppered her with questions about his cultural heritage.

Their conversation led Kenny to see his marginalized identity not as a curse, but as a rich blessing enabling him to empathize with others.
